A Step towards a Healthy Childhood
As a strategy of promoting community health and well being, a Deworming Day Awareness Program was successfully organized in Kalaivani Model Matric Higher Secondary School, Palathurai. The program was to enlighten young students on how to avoid worm infestations and the need to maintain their hygiene.
Mrs. Nithiya Rajkumar, School Correspondent and Mrs. Meenakshi, Headmistress were quite accommodative to the program and with their help, the program was run very smoothly.
Why Deworming Matters
Deworming plays a vital role in safeguarding the health of kids. The intestinal worm infections can lead to anemia, malnutrition, poor grades and growth at schools. This issue can be alleviated through early intervention and give a child improved physical and psychological development.
In this regard, this program was initiated by the nursing students whose mission was to create awareness and persuade school children to take preventive measures..
Program Goals.
The program was centered around:
- Worm reduction in school children.
- Such complications like anemia and poor growth are avoided.
- Nourishing and increasing health.
- Encouraging frequent deworming.
- Building awareness on hygiene and sanitation.
- Promoting healthy behaviours such as the use of footwear and the use of clean water.
- Engaging teachers and caregivers in monitoring of child health.
TARGET GROUP
Students from 1st to 5th standard (Age group 6–11 years)
ORGANIZING TEAM
The program was organized and conducted by B.Sc Nursing (VII semester) students under the guidance of:
- Professor Gandhimathi, MSc Nursing, RN, RM, HOD, Community Health Department (Vice Principal)
- Mrs. Rajeswari, MSc Nursing
- Mrs. Chithra, BSc (N), Nursing Tutor
- Ms. Jacqueline, BSc (N), Nursing Tutor In coordination with school authorities.
PROGRAMMES
Awareness Engaging Activities.
The program was to be interactive, fun and educational so that children could easily learn vital health concepts.
Warm Welcome & Prayer
Ms. Martina and team opened the session with a prayer song, which helped establish a peaceful and respectful environment. This was then topped by a welcome speech by Ms. Premalatha who emphasized the need to create awareness of deworming.
Role Play – Learning by doing.
A role played by Liyana and team described the way worms get into the body, their negative impact and the value of healthy food. The presentation was easy, interesting and received well by the children.
Puppet Show – Fun with a Message.
A puppet show by Madhumitha and co was among the attractions. The children were taught various types of worms, their causes and how to prevent them through the use of colorful characters and funny stories.
Mime Performance- Speakless Yet Strong.
The mime performance by Shanan and the team was an artistic presentation of the reasons behind worm infestation of poor hygiene, unsafe food and poor sanitation. The play did a good job of communicating the significance of healthy lifestyles without uttering a single word.
Demo Dance – Health in Motion.
An energetic demonstration dance by Ms. Vidhu and her team showed the correct hand washing, oral hygiene and personal care practices. The concert was concluded with a happy reminder:

Interactive Games
The children were entertained with fun games such as memory challenges and activities that require passing balls, which helped to strengthen important health messages. Prize was given to the winners which made the learning process exciting.
Promoting Engagement and Knowledge.
All the participants were served with a refreshing break with lemon juice and peanut candy which also promoted community interaction and gave a happy touch to the program.
A Meaningful Conclusion
Heartfelt Vote of Thanks by Ms. Pavithra M who thanked all participants, faculty members, performers and participants, closed the program.
Impact of the Program
The Deworming Day education program was very effective in creating awareness on the children about:
- Prevention and control of worm attack.
- Value of hygiene and sanitation.
- Eating well and nutrition.
The students were able to learn the required health practices not only, but also to have fun in the process by engaging in creative activities like puppet shows, role plays, and games.
Final Thoughts
The event was able to bring out the need to embrace preventive healthcare and healthy living amongst young children The program helped to create a more healthier and aware future generation by encouraging easy but effective habits.
Such efforts are indicative of the dedication of medical students and teachers to making a positive difference to society- one child at a time.
